Custom Colors for Men's Bespoke Shoes: Choosing Color and Patina

Choosing custom colors for men's bespoke shoes is one of the most personal decisions in a commission. Color is the first thing people notice about a pair of shoes, yet it is often the last thing men think through carefully. Fit and construction come first, but once a pair is made entirely around your feet, there is no reason to settle for a shade that is merely close.

At Bondeno, every pair is made to order in Florence, Italy, by master shoemakers from a family craft that began in 1908 and is now in its sixth generation. That means the color of your shoes can be chosen with the same care as their fit. This guide explains how custom color works on our men's bespoke shoes, how leather choice shapes the way a color looks and ages, and how to commission the exact shade you want without leaving home.

Why Color Matters More on Bespoke Shoes

A ready-to-wear shoe is designed to sell in large numbers, so its color has to suit as many buyers as possible. A bespoke pair is made once, for one person. That changes the question from "which of these colors will do?" to "what do I actually want to wear?"

Color also decides how often a pair gets worn. The right shade becomes the shoe you reach for every week; the wrong one can sit in the closet no matter how well it fits. Because a bespoke pair takes about five months to make and deliver, it is worth spending a little time on color before you order.

The classic men's palette

Our men's collection of oxfords, derbies, monk straps and loafers starts with a core of classic calfskin colors: black, brown, tan and burgundy or oxblood. Together they cover almost every situation a man dresses for:

  • Black for formal occasions, evening wear and the most conservative business settings.
  • Brown as the most versatile all-rounder, from suits to tailored trousers.
  • Tan for daytime, lighter suits, and smart-casual outfits with chinos or denim.
  • Burgundy and oxblood for a richer, slightly more individual look that still works with navy and grey.

Beyond these classics, many of our hand-painted calfskin styles come in colors such as navy, pine green, violet and khaki. Any of these styles can be the starting point for your own design. Men's shoes start at $1,990, and choosing Goodyear Welt construction adds $495.

When to go beyond the classics

Some clients want a shade the standard palette does not cover, such as a brown to match a favorite belt or a color from a pair they have owned for years. That is what our custom design and color process is for.

How to Commission a Custom Color

Our Design Your Own Custom Made Shoes listing explains that there are two ways to commission a custom design and color.

Option 1: The upload link

On the next business day after you place your order, we email you a link where you can upload pictures of the exact style and color you would like us to recreate. Photos taken in daylight, from several angles, work best. If you would like us to confirm that we can recreate a particular design or color before you commit, you can email us in advance and we will confirm your recreation request before you place the order.

Option 2: A live video call

If you would rather talk it through, you can schedule a video call with one of our bespoke specialists, either before or after you place your order. The specialist will help you settle on a specific design and color for your commission.

Final confirmation before production

Whichever route you choose, color is not left to chance. Your final design and color are confirmed with you before your master shoemaker in Florence begins handcrafting the pair.

Leather Choice: How It Shapes Color and Patina

The same color can look very different depending on the leather it is applied to. We offer two upper leathers, and each one carries color in its own way.

Hermès D'Annonay box calf

Our smooth calfskin comes from the historic Tanneries d'Annonay, founded in 1838 and today a member of the Hermès Group. It is an A-grade, full-grain calfskin with an incredibly fine grain, valued for its suppleness and enduring structure. As our D'Annonay leather page explains, it has a luxurious, transparent finish and takes a brilliant polish.

That transparency is what makes it so rewarding for color. Box calf develops a distinguished character and a unique patina with every wear. In practice, this means your shoes will not look exactly the same in five years as they do on the day they arrive. Wear, polishing and care gradually add depth, so the pair becomes more personal over time.

Italian "Roma" suede

Our premium 1.4 mm Italian suede is selected for its luxurious hand-feel, consistent finish and rich texture. Suede shows color in a softer, more matte way than polished calf, which makes it a natural choice for more relaxed styles and for shades that would look too formal in shiny leather. It is also soft and breathable, and it conforms beautifully to your personal lasts.

Choosing between them

  • Choose box calf if you want a color that can be polished, gains depth with age and suits formal or business wear.
  • Choose suede if you want a softer, more textured look for smart-casual dressing.

Please specify your preferred leather in the Order Notes when you order.

Thinking About Patina

Patina is the gradual change in a leather's appearance that comes from wear, light, polish and time.

Let the leather do the work

With D'Annonay box calf, much of the character comes naturally. Two clients who order the same color will end up with slightly different-looking shoes after a few years, because each pair ages with its owner.

Plan your color for the long term

When choosing a color, think about how you want the shoes to look in several years, not only on day one. Lighter shades such as tan tend to show the effects of wear and polish more visibly, while black stays closest to its original look.

Care keeps color rich

Keep your shoes on shoe trees between wears, rotate pairs, and polish calfskin with a cream in a matching shade. Brush suede with a soft suede brush instead.

Your At-Home Fitting: Color and Fit Commissioned Together

Custom color only matters if the shoes fit. Every Bondeno commission starts with our at-home fitting process, so the entire fitting happens at home. Here is how it works:

  1. Order online. Choose your style, and add your leather preference and color notes. You can also get help by phone, email or a video consultation.
  2. Receive your fitting box. We ship you a fitting kit with Bio-Foam® precision foot molds, made by Smithers Bio-Medical Systems in Kent, Ohio. Delivery takes two to three days in the US and Canada.
  3. Take your molds at home. In about 10 to 15 minutes, you step in and out of the molds, take six pictures of each foot and record five girth measurements. You can do it alone or with help, and a guided video call is available if you want one. The molds capture an exact replica of each foot up to two inches above the ankle bones.
  4. Return the molds using the prepaid label.
  5. Review your digital last. Within five business days we email you a digital blueprint of your lasts, with unlimited revisions (two business days each).
  6. Your personal lasts are made. Within five business days of your approval, we carve your personal wooden lasts, which are kept on file for your future pairs.
  7. Confirm design and color. We confirm your final design and color with you.
  8. Handcrafting. A master shoemaker in Florence makes your shoes in a process of more than 250 steps. Production and delivery take about five months.
  9. Delivery and fit check. Try the shoes with the same socks you wore for your fitting. If they do not fit, our Fit Guarantee means a remake is offered when the shoes do not fit the way you want.

Because your lasts are stored, your next pair, perhaps in a second color, can be ordered without another fitting. See our FAQ for more on ordering and lead times.
