Your First Bespoke Shoes: Which Style Should You Order First?

Ordering your first pair of bespoke shoes comes with a question that ready-to-wear never asks: if you could have any shoe made for your feet, which one should come first? With so many combinations of style, leather, color and sole, it's easy to stall, or to pick something exciting that ends up sitting in the closet.

This guide is for men about to commission their first bespoke pair. It explains why the first pair carries more weight than the ones that follow, which styles make the strongest first choice, and how to settle the color, leather and sole without second-guessing yourself.

Why Your First Bespoke Pair Matters Most

Every bespoke shoe is built on a last, the foot-shaped form the leather is shaped around. With your first order, that last is made for you. At Bondeno, your left and right lasts are each carved from scratch from your own foot shape, in Florence, Italy, and they're included in the price of your shoes.

That makes the first pair different in two ways:

  • It sets up every future pair. Your lasts are kept in our climate-controlled archive in Italy, so later orders are made on the same lasts, with free last adjustments with each new order as your feet change.
  • It's the pair you'll judge bespoke by. Choose a shoe you'll wear often, and you'll learn quickly how a pair made on your own lasts feels across a full working week. Choose one you wear twice a year, and you'll learn very little.

So the best first pair is rarely the boldest one. It's the one you'll reach for most.

Start With Where You'll Wear Them

Before you look at a single model, think about the last month. Where did you wear dress shoes, and with what?

Suits most days

If you wear a suit most of the week, start with an Oxford. Its closed lacing gives a clean, close line across the instep, which is why it sits naturally with tailoring and formal business dress.

Business casual or a mix

If your weeks move between tailoring, odd jackets, chinos and the occasional pair of dark jeans, a Derby is usually the better first choice. Its open lacing reads slightly less formal and pairs easily with heavier cloths and casual trousers.

Mostly smart casual

If you rarely wear a suit, look at a loafer or a monk strap. Both work well with smart casual clothes, and both can still be dressed up when needed.

The Best First Bespoke Shoes for Men

The cap-toe Oxford

The cap-toe Oxford is the classic first commission for a reason: it's appropriate for almost every formal and business setting. In black calfskin it covers interviews, board meetings, weddings and evening events; in dark brown it softens enough for daily office wear. You'll find cap-toe, wholecut and semi-wholecut designs in black, dark brown, burgundy, brown and tan in our bespoke Oxford collection.

The plain-toe or cap-toe Derby

A Derby in dark brown is arguably the most versatile dress shoe a man can own. It's at home with a flannel suit, a sport coat or a pair of chinos. Our bespoke Derby collection offers plain-toe, cap-toe and apron-toe designs in the same five classic colors.

The monk strap

A monk strap sits between the Oxford and the loafer. The buckle gives it more character than a lace-up, yet a single monk in a dark, refined leather still works with a suit. It's a good first choice if you want something a little more distinctive without giving up versatility. Our DOMENICO single monk strap is a good example.

The penny loafer

For men who rarely tie their shoes, a penny loafer can be the most-worn pair in the closet. It's an easy match with smart casual clothes and travels well. Because a loafer has no laces to adjust, it depends entirely on its shape to stay on your foot, so a loafer made on your own lasts is a natural candidate for bespoke. A dress boot

If you live somewhere with long, cold winters, a dress boot can be a sensible first pair. Chelsea, wingtip and monk strap boots all appear among our men's bespoke dress boots.

You can browse all of these, from Oxfords and Derbies to monk straps and loafers, in our Heritage Bespoke Shoe Collection.

Styles to save for your second pair

Bright hand-painted colors, full brogues in bold tones and statement wholecuts are some of the most beautiful shoes we make. They're often better as a second or third pair, once you have a dependable everyday shoe and know exactly how your lasts feel.

Choosing the Color

For a first pair, keep the color simple:

  • Black is the most formal choice and the right one if your work or social calendar leans toward formal dress.
  • Dark brown is the most versatile. It works with navy, grey, olive and most casual trousers, and it's appropriate for business in most offices.
  • Burgundy and oxblood are a step more distinctive but still wear with navy and grey.
  • Tan and lighter browns are lovely in warmer months and with casual clothes, but they're less versatile as an only pair.

If you love the design of one model but the color of another, you can ask for the order to be made in a color from a different model in the order notes.

Leather, Sole and Construction

Leather

Our calfskin comes from Tanneries d'Annonay, part of the Hermès Group. It's a full-grain box calf that develops a patina over time, which makes it a strong, forgiving choice for a first pair worn often. Suede is a good option for loafers and smart casual styles.

Sole material

You can choose an Italian Pietro Presot leather sole or an Italian Vibram rubber sole. Leather is the traditional choice for dress shoes. Rubber adds grip in wet weather and adds about 4 mm to the sole's thickness.

Construction

Depending on the model, our men's shoes are made with Blake or Goodyear construction. On most shoes, a Blake-Rapid double leather sole is included, and Goodyear welting is available as a +$495 upgrade. Goodyear adds a cork-filled footbed that molds to your feet and superior water resistance, and it's easy to resole, which suits a first pair that will be worn hard for years. Blake-Rapid, which is included, is also resoleable and water resistant. Heritage Bespoke Shoes are $1,990 with Blake construction or $2,485 with Goodyear, and Heritage Dress Boots are $2,490 or $2,985; your personal last is included. For a deeper comparison, read our guide to Blake Stitch vs Goodyear Welt vs Blake Rapid.

Toe shape

Toe shape is part of the design, not a fixed feature of the model. Based on your foot shape, we design a few custom toe box shapes for you to choose from, and you'll see the digital blueprint of your lasts before anything is carved.

What Happens After You Choose

Once you've picked your model, the fitting happens at home. Using our at-home Bio-Foam® mold kit, you'll capture your foot shape with Bio-Foam® precision foot molds, six photos of each foot and five girth measurements that tell us how snug you'd like the shoe in different areas. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes, and a bespoke specialist can guide you by video call if you'd like.

Within five business days of receiving your molds, we email a digital blueprint of your lasts for you to approve, with unlimited revisions. Your design and color are confirmed while your lasts are carved, and your shoes are then handmade in Florence, Italy, by our sixth-generation shoemaking family, working in a tradition that dates back to 1908. Production takes 5 months.

Every pair is covered by our Fit Guarantee: a remake is offered when the shoes or boots don't fit the way the client wants.

A Quick Decision Guide

  • Mostly suits: black or dark brown cap-toe Oxford.
  • Business casual: dark brown plain-toe or cap-toe Derby.
  • Mostly smart casual: penny loafer or single monk strap.
  • Cold, wet winters: consider Goodyear welting, a rubber sole or a dress boot.
  • Unsure: dark brown is the safest color, and a Derby is the safest silhouette.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best first pair of bespoke shoes?

For most men, a dark brown or black Oxford or Derby. Pick the one that matches what you wear most often, so you wear your first pair regularly.

Can I order a style that isn't in the collection?

Yes. Every pattern is drawn on your own lasts, and our bespoke specialist can work with you on a fully custom design.

How are bespoke shoes fitted if I order online?

Entirely at home. We send a Bio-Foam® foot-mold kit, you step in and out of the molds, and you take six photos of each foot and record five girth measurements. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes, and a bespoke specialist can guide you by video call if you'd like.

Do I need new foot molds for my second pair?

No. Your lasts are stored in Italy, so you can reorder using your stored lasts, with free last adjustments with each new order.

Should my first pair have a Goodyear welt?

If you plan to wear the pair often and in all weather, Goodyear welting, a +$495 upgrade, is a sensible choice. Blake-Rapid, which is included, is also a resoleable double leather sole.

How long will my first pair take?

About 5 months. Production begins once you've approved the digital blueprint of your lasts, and your lasts are carved and your shoes handmade in Florence, Italy.
